According
to the university lecturer in this week's lesson, Charles Dickens
is one of the greatest writers in the English language. She
mentions, in passing, that there are more than 2,000 characters in
the author's novels and stories. Many of these fictional figures have
been taken into the popular consciousness: the scheming
Uriah Heep, miserly Ebenezer Scrooge, Serjeant
Buzfuz the bullying barrister who gets Pickwick falsely convicted and
David Copperfield, whose perilous life seems to reflect the many
twists and turns of Dickens himself.
